If you're moving to your new home from a rental property, then make sure that you give enough notice to your landlord. You don't want have to pay rent for a property you're no longer in, on top of your mortgage. And leave the rental in good condition. Not only is it common courtesy to do so, but it will also ensure you get your deposit back.
When you move make sure you:
- Change the telephone, gas and electricity into your name.
- Take meter readings on the day you move in.
- Arrange building and contents insurance.
- Get a TV licence.
- If you're moving into a communal building, find out when the maintenance charge is due.
- Let the council tax office know of your move.
- Get your post redirected.
- Let your friends, family and service providers, such as your bank and mobile phone company, know your new contact details.
Agree your moving day with the vendor well in advance and sort out any necessary removal transport. Remember that you'll need to organise a parking space for the van. If you have pets or young children, you may want to get someone to look after them for the day.
Last but not least, pack yourself a survival kit and keep the box somewhere that it won't get muddled up with every other box you're taking. Include all the vital ingredients for making tea and coffee, chocolate biscuits are a must, and you may even want to make a packed lunch. Also include loo roll, soap, and towels in case you want a shower at the end of the day.
